I have downloaded Lunar Linux and am about to burn my last CD and I don't have internet connection except for my work machine. Out of the box, what do I get from Lunar Linux? From this list showing on Distrowatch, are all those packages already there or are they only available (for those connected to the internet) on download? Where can I go to view what I have on that iso so that I know what I am in for as I burn my last CD? |

the cd without internet connection is pretty useless...
There's just a kernel, lunar stuff, compile tools and commandline... so no X, no services (except openssh)... you can of course download all of the tarballz on an internet connected computer and transfer these files to the lunar box... a bit tedious if you ask me |

From http://wiki.lunar-linux.org/index.php/Lunar_Linux: Quote: | Lunar Linux is a source based Linux distribution. It is built entirely by compiling source code, using custom optimizations.
It installs a complete bootstrap development system first. After telling the Lunar package manager which software will be required, it builds the entire system by downloading current source code and locally compiling an optimized system tailored toward the users specific needs. This should result in a lean and optimized operating system. On the downside, compiling a whole distribution from scratch may be time-consuming and complicate the task of keeping the packages up to date.
Currently, Lunar only supports the x86 architecture, but support for Sparc, AMD64, PPC and Alpha is being worked on. |
Be aware though that this bootstrap development system is quite minimal: it does contain enough of the standard network card and disk drivers to get most people off the ground, but that is about it. The rest of the system is extremely minimal so that you can really decide exactly what you want on your machine, whether you are building a lean and mean server or a full desktop environment. But that does mean that you have to download all of the additional software that you want. Lunar is not a one install and you're done distro.
However, it is possible to install software without having a network link on the machine, and what you need to do is described in Installation without a [fast] network connection but you will need to transfer the software you want from a machine that does have a network connection using DVD- or CD-ROM. As I write this there are 2366 supported modules in the Lunar moonbase, and the corresponding compressed tarballs occupy almost 4.5Gb.
Therefore you will really need to know what modules (packages) you require, and their dependencies, so that you can download then to CD-ROM and transfer them to your machine.
You might want to take a look at my User Talk Page as this describes my [newbie] experience of installing Lunar from scratch since September. |

Thanks for the info. I will read up what you have given me and see what I can do. If I fail to do anything meaningful I will get in touch. |

I basically want KDE, mysql, KBasic, a few games like supertux and mutimedia. I have downloaded KBasic and for mysql I am planning on using XAMPP. May you advice me on the tarballz I need for KDE and how I can lunar hold them or get them to work on my box. _________________ See what the Lord has done |
