Hello,

I decided to try Lunar and at the moment I'm following the lfirsttime (or whatever) instructions. My PC keeps on compiling, configuring things and printing garbage on the screen (is it actually needed?) for more than an hour and a half and I still haven't done 'lunar update' - it's still the fisrt 'lin -cr gcc...' recompile. My cpu is 2500 GHz Barton with a gig of RAM.

I know that compiling things needs time (obviously), but with that pace I will need at least a free day to install usable desktop. My question is if that is normal or there might be some problem in my tv. I put O2, athlon-xp optimizations (nothing unusual, I hope).

And if such times are normal, what about day-to-day updates? Do they take the same amount of time?

P.S. OMG. It finished while I was writing on the other PC, so I couls start the whole system update.

You might want to look at the How long does it take? link under the Documentation tab on the Lunar Linux web site.

You might also want to look at the Linux From Scratch pages, because each package that is installed for LFS is given a Standard Build Unit rating. See the About SBUs chapter in the LFS online documentation.

Yes, it does take time to build a complete desktop from source, but it doesn't take too much time to keep it up to date provided that you do it regularly. If you wait six weeks between updates, you're probably looking at a couple of hours to rebuild the out of date modules (kernel, firefox, etc). To get some idea of what to expect, you can read about my (newbie) experience of installing and updating Lunar 1.5.2 in my User Report.
