Is it possible to set Lunar to use OSS, the Open Sound System as default sound system at compilation time or as a all-system default?
My Via sound card is acting up with ALSA.

Kernel 2.6.22.1 has OSS drivers in the kernel, and assuming you have built your kernel with OSS support you are able with Xine and Mplayer to choose to use ALSA or not. It will ask you at compilation time. I think you may just even be able to choose which sound system to use in the preferences section of the programs if you have both ALSA and OSS installed. I haven't tried to use OSS with the 2.6 kernel since I am happy with ALSA but I think this is all you should have to do. That and of course load your appropriate OSS sound module for your card.

I have compiled a kernel, ripped out ALSA and replaced it with the relevant OSS-drivers. I still don't get the right reaction, as in, well, any sound. Perhaps I should rebuild the whole shebang?

OSS will be removed from the linux kernel in 2.6.23. you should work with the ALSA people to get your problem fixed, as OSS will no longer be available to you in the VERY NEAR future.
