I just ran a full 'lunar update' under a 12.6.12.4 kernel and then ran 'lin linux-2.6' to build the latest 2.6.14.1 kernel. After booting the new kernel (and sorting out some kernel driver to module changes), I was unable to start X because /dev/input/mouse0 had disappeared!

The solution in a nutshell:
with help from Moe, Florin and Nestu on #lunar, I downloaded e2fsprogs [to update /etc/init.d/mount], removed devfs and then ran 'lin udev' before rebooting to a working system.

This article is just a pointer in case someone else has problems, or is able to add more information to the summary above.
Other issues encountered during the update are described in my _User Talk_ page, and on the _Mailing List_.

The Linux from Scratch pages have a section entitled Device and Module Handling on an LFS System that explains the background and setup of udev.
