Ive recently installed Lunar and have found it a stable, usable and all around fun system to set up. My question is why such a small membership in the forum? I realize that forum membership may not be an accurate measure of userbase but it seems to me that Lunar should be much more prominent than it is. What I mean is that Ive been using Linux for around 3 years and have tried every distro I could find and only recently stumbled across Lunar. Get the word out guys. Lunar is pretty damn awesome.

There are probably several reasons, and none at all Smile

1. There is no plan for world domination. Lunar scratches the itch of the current developers and current users. That's enough.
2. The development team is small, and consists of volunteers working in their own time.
3. Lunar started out as a server distro, without X or desktop support on the ISO, and therefore not really of interest to most Linux users.
4. As a source-based distro, with rolling update system, there isn't really the same need for regular ISO releases, and so Lunar doesn't get the attention on DistroWatch and other Linux interest sites. But we're not looking to take over the world anyway.
5. Lunar is not a distro for beginners. Therefore most users already know how to search the web, and are able to sort out a lot of their own problems, and can create and update modules to satisfy their own needs.
6. The forum pages were more active until the spammers took over, and many devs simply gave up looking at them. And quite honestly, unless it is a specific question about Lunar, the user would be better off searching in more appropriate places.
7. There is usually a presence on the #lunar irc channel which can offer [semi] real-time help for a problem. And that's also why the forum registration process that was introduced to fight the spam directs you to the #lunar irc channel. If you are already there, why not ask your question there too? But strangely enough, users don't.
8. Note that there is also the Lunar Mailing List which is low volume and is delivered right to the developers' doors! You can also ask there.

In fact, there was an experimental 1.6.2beta ISO with X and Xfce already installed. This drew complaints from the die-hard server users who didn't want the X and desktop side. It also required a significant amount of work to keep everything required for the ISO up to date and consistent so that it could be built and tested and would install cleanly. It was only by dropping X and desktop again that the new ISO made it out of the door in a reasonable time.
Three cheers for Ratler for making the new ISO Smile

And now that I come to think about it, people were a lot more active until a previous incarnation of the web site was updated and required new and separate login registration for the forum pages, the documentation pages and the bug tracker, or something like that, and many people simply didn't bother to re-register... Sad
