Before I embark on the radical rebuild outlined in the ATI Radeon 9100: XOrg-drm or fglrx ? thread, I think it's probably wise to back up my system. Not that there are valuable user files on there, but simply to avoid days of rebuilding from scratch if I make a typo.

I set up the system using the old installation guidelines, so I have the following partitions: /boot, /, (swap), /usr, /var, and /home. Unfortunately the system doesn't have a CD or DVD writer on it.

There's enough space, but is it feasible to backup /boot, /, /usr and /var to files under /home ? Max file size limits?
What would be the best method for doing it? Single user mode? Booting from the (1.5.2) ISO?
And what are the favoured backup commands these days?
