I keep getting bored and wandering the vast universe of linux distrobutions. I have successfully used fedora, Santa Fe, ubuntu, and gentoo. I have unsuccessfully used many, many more.
Somehow, randomly, I ended up at your site lately, and felt like exploring. Lunar looks interesting - like an easy-to-install gentoo? So I feel like hanging around a bit. I'm not quite ready to replace my stable, fast gentoo system (which I've been configuring for about a month, now), which I am quite proud of having successfully installed (in one day, no less - and on the first time), but I'm here to look around.
I read the "empty topics are scary" thread, and decided I'd post something, even though I don't really have anything to post. I really like small communities - they're usually more like a family or group of friends, which I like.
So yeah, I may actually start using Lunar when an AMD64 (or x86_64) version comes out. I'll at least try it on a different partition.
I do have a topic, kind of, to insert at the end, here, I suppose. It is this: could current users of Lunar post some of their experiences, how hard it is to get things working, how large the repository (moonbase?) is, etc.? Also, and slightly more importantly, how's the gaming on Lunar?
On gentoo, I love the feature of having the games in portage, and it just runs an optomizing (possibly) install script for the game (in the disc drive), rather than the default install. Not that it's all that important - those games have their own install scripts that work most of the time. It's just easier with portage.
Ok, I'm going to stop rambling...I think.
Summary: Hey, everyone, I'm new, and am not planning on using Lunar until I can compare 64 bit and 32 bit versions, but I'm gonna be around for the heck of it 'cause I don't like gentoo's forums (use 'em for help and that's it). How's the Lunar experience been, specifically on the gaming side, and what's the package management system really like?

System, in case someone cares:
MoBo: FOXCONN nForce4 Ultra
CPU: AMD Athalon 64 3000+
GPU: eVGA e-GeForce 6600GT
Sound: onboard nForce4 AC'97 7.1 channel (and it will be until I can find a flaw with it)
HD: Hitachi SATA II 80GB
OS: gentoo AMD64 =D and possibly, in the far future, a (small) Windows partition (for those games that don't support linux that I bought before I became a linux user)
P.S. An introduction: I'm a Born Again Christian, though most Christians don't like to admit it, I love metal (not progressive rock like Metallica, mind you - real metal, like Zao, Norma Jean, or Living Sacrifice), I wear lots of black, I have hair down to my shoulders (a bit below, actually), and I'm a Sophomore in College majoring in Computer Science at Bethel University. Of course, this knowledge is enough for anyone to be able to find (and, if they wish, kill) me, so the information should NOT be abused. I love reading and writing. I'm going to go post a suggestion for a feature I've wanted in a lot of distros, now. |

I love Extol's old stuff - but that's the only band I know of that I'm sure is Norwegian. I like Slechtvalk (Dutch) and Pantokrator (Swedish) (two of my favorite bands), but they're not really Norwegian. My other favorite band is Antestor, and, though I may be wrong, I believe they're from Norway.
Of course, those are all Christian bands. Most secular bands sound too...(grasps for words)...chaotic, maybe. I like the more melodic stuff, like Antestor's newest CD. Stuff that has a melody to it, kind of an underlying layer of hope beneath the sound of a world intent on killing you.

Yea. I don't like Extol much. All my bands weren't Christian bands....Hell....They're websites are allowed to be .org's because they claim their purpose is to rid Norway of Christianity and bring it back to it's Norse roots. _________________ In Soviet Russia, ISOs install you. |

I don't like norwegians and metal that much anymore, anyway lets keep this on topic - too much personal information about people's lives just makes clutter and doesn't help you with your problems.
I sure would like to make an x86_64 iso - as a matter of fact I was and are working on it already a while ago. The problem is that I do not have the money nor the hardware to test and build such a thing. Other people do but they do not have the knowledge, or the time.
So people, stop whining about an x86_64 iso. Next person who complains is obligated to donate me a x86_64 machine. Shipping address available - just email me. You are warned! |

Well, for all of you amd64 freaks (including me ) I will suggest you try to port Lunar your self. First install Lunar i686, and then build a 64 bit crosscompiler/toolchain/kernel. Here is a way to do that http://wiki.sourcemage.org/HOWTO-Build_a_64bit_Kernel. |

Hey, I enjoy metal as well. Though i guess to consider a sad copy of underoath metal is...unwise. I'm new too wandering around getting ready to install a 10gb partition with Lunar so i can play around with it, whilst I spend my most of my time a slave to windows for my box has an ATI card T_T.
I'm not trying to pick on your taste or start a flamewar, I just don't think they fall into the genre you listed them as. |
