Microsoft To Offer Virus Defense
http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/05/13/1225220&from=rss
FridayBob writes "According to the New York Times, Microsoft plans to enter the consumer antivirus business with a subscription service next year. Most of us will remember Microsoft's assimilation of RAV Antivirus from GeCAD Software of Romania in 2003." From the article: "Microsoft plans to expand the service beyond its 60,000 employees this summer and offer an open trial for consumers this fall. No date has been set for a commercial introduction, but the executive in charge of the new business said it would ultimately be offered as an annual service by subscription."Zonk2005-05-13T14:54:00+00:00microsoftno-more-foot-shootingit57,56,47,30,11,7,457India Eyeing Its Own Open Source Licence
http://yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/05/13/1235245&from=rss
Guru Goo writes "Deepak Phatak of the Indian Institute of Technology,Mumbai has begun an effort to create an open-source license that will let programmers share ideas while also letting them retain the rights to their own software modifications. The license will likely function much like the Berkeley Software Distribution or the MIT License programs, he added. The number of open-source licenses has exploded, leaving many in the community miffed. But Phatak's proposal comes with the power of numbers. India's 1,750 colleges with computer science and electrical engineering degrees admit about 250,000 students a year. Combined with the outsourcing boom, that makes India one of the major centers for software development. While the collaboration between academia and industry in india is not as pervasive as in the U.S., it is growing."Zonk2005-05-13T14:14:00+00:00patentsthey're-everywhere!yro62,58,40,26,10,6,362Firefox Lead Engineer Scolds KDE Project

trent42 writes "Firefox lead developer Ben Goodger has had harsh words on his blog for the KDE project, in light of its public tiff with Apple over the KHTML rendering engine. Goodger says 'Safari's renderer is vastly superior to the KHTML used by Konqueror,' and that the KDE developers should follow Apple's lead and focus more on the needs of users, instead of insisting on software perfection."<p><a href='http://www.feedstermedia.com/feedster/adclick.php?bannerid=212&zoneid=9&source=&dest=http%3A%2F%2Fad.doubleclick.net%2Fclk%3B15865747%3B11269323%3Bn%3Fhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.sun.com%2Fnc05q2' target='_blank'><img src='http://images.feedstermedia.com/feedcache/ostg/i/sun05Q2-ondemand-ad3.gif?z=9' width='468' height='60' alt='On-Demand Video from Network Computing 05Q2' title='On-Demand Video from Network Computing 05Q2' border='0'></a></p>Zonk2005-05-13T13:37:00+00:00kdehe-said-she-saidapple236,224,178,128,48,32,22236The Xbox 360 Unveiled
http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/05/13/053237&from=rss
You may or may not have caught the Xbox 360 unveiling on MTV Thursday night, but the internet will provide. A plethora of sites have photos, videos, commentary, specifications, and interviews about the new system. Your fellow readers have pulled together to provide links to: 1up.com, Joystiq, Gamespot, The BBC, CNN, NYT, Gamespy, Team Xbox, Voodoo Extreme, Anandtech, and eToyChest. The official Xbox 360 site opened last night as well for word straight from the source. For more official images Ourcolony.net has been 'solved', and now features an OurColony specific video preview. Finally, for commentary on the event, the Video Game Ombudsman provides an alternative to the press releases. From the post: "Kyle Orland (9:28:42 PM): The future of gaming is a girl in a blue dress? Dan Dormer (9:28:47 PM): The future of gaming is a girl with a bag? Kyle Orland (9:28:57 PM): She's the Xbox! http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/05/13/0520214&from=rss
cperciva writes "Hyper-Threading, as currently implemented on Intel Pentium Extreme Edition, Pentium 4, Mobile Pentium 4, and Xeon processors, suffers from a serious security flaw. This flaw permits local information disclosure, including allowing an unprivileged user to steal an RSA private key being used on the same machine. Administrators of multi-user systems are strongly advised to take action to disable Hyper-Threading immediately. I will be presenting this attack at BSDCan 2005 at 10:00 AM EDT on May 13th, and at the conclusion of my talk I will also releasing a paper describing the attack and possible mitigation strategies."CowboyNeal2005-05-13T12:07:00+00:00securitynot-just-for-performanceit223,220,152,102,44,30,17223iPod Dangerous When Wet

fenderdb writes "Brad Fitzgerald of LiveJournal fame has written a utility and a quick article on how all hard drives from the consumer level to the highest level 'enterprise' grade SCSI and SATA drives do not obey the fsync() function. http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/05/12/2251210&from=rss
ninja_assault_kitten writes "Silicon.com has an interesting article on the apparently slowing growth of Firefox. To quote the article, 'The slackening of Firefox's growth could mean that the browser has converted a substantial proportion of its natural constituency, thought to be early adopters and the technically savvy. It could also show that the browser's widely publicised security flaws have begun to undermine the foundation's argument that people should switch from IE to be safer.' One thing's for sure, with the release of 1.0.3 and now 1.0.4 we can probably expect to breach the 80 million download mark shortly."CowboyNeal2005-05-13T04:19:00+00:00mozillareaching-equilibriumit364,346,263,163,62,34,19364Second Round of Serenity Screenings Sold Out

j1ggl3x writes "From a Rotten Tomatoes news article: 'Following the sell-out success of the May 5th pre-screenings, creator Joss Whedon recently announced that more advance previews of his movie Serenity would appear at twenty theaters in twenty cities, this time on May 26th. By the next morning, well before the official list of cities was posted, fans on the Serenity movie site and elsewhere had diligently located half the listings through trial and error and several of the locations were already sold out. Serenity hits theaters on September 30th.'"<p><a href='http://www.feedstermedia.com/feedster/adclick.php?bannerid=190&zoneid=7&source=&dest=http%3A%2F%2Fad.doubleclick.net%2Fclk%3B15865747%3B11269323%3Bn%3Fhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.sun.com%2Fnc05q2' target='_blank'><img src='http://images.feedstermedia.com/feedcache/ostg/i/sun05Q2-ondemand-ad1.gif?z=7' width='468' height='60' alt='On-Demand Video from Network Computing 05Q2' title='On-Demand Video from Network Computing 05Q2' border='0'></a></p>CowboyNeal2005-05-13T02:54:00+00:00scifijust-can't-waitmainpage168,152,118,91,26,22,15168MPAA Targets TV Download Sites

KenDaMan writes "ZDNet.com is reporting that the MPAA is targeting websites that serve as traffic directors for BitTorrent swaps. From the article: 'Continuing its war on Internet file-swapping sites, the Motion Picture Association of America said Thursday that it has filed lawsuits against a half-dozen hubs for TV show trading.'
