I tried Lunar Linux last week for the first time and I am already loving it. Though I had been a power user of Gentoo sometime back, had some issues with it constantly and then moved on to Arch and stayed put for a while. But wanted to try out a source based distro again and thought of givin Lunar a shot, and everything went without any issues.

So now to my question. I got a brand new Eee Pc just a few days ago. Obviously the first thing i did was kill windows and install linux. but eversince i tried lunar, my hands are itching to load it on my eee as well. what do u guys think? has neone done that already? if so can ayone share his or her experiences here? i know it should be obviously possible ofcourse, but still it wud be great if anyone who tried already posts some info!

Oh btw, the model i am talkin about is EEEPC 1000H

To my knowledge no one has tried Lunar on the Eee. Feel free to give it a whirl, and let us know how it went.

How has this worked out for you? I was thinking of doing exactly the same thing.

Sorry about the delay albinoloverats. I was totally occupied with work related stuff, hence couldn't go ahead with my plans. However I managed to give it a shot last Thursday. And finally managed to get it up and running. More on my experience in my next post. (Need a nictoine fix urgently!) Wink

The moonbases of both my desks at home were pretty much outdated, and since I had some time this week, decided to perform a huge lunar update on both of 'em. Started the update in the morning, and then once it got running, went to work. Came back in the evening, and the updates were finished, with very minor errors. But fixing them was no big deal. This got me thinking, well its time that i kill my previous linux on eee pc and load lunar onto it.

The model I am talkin about is the EEEPC 1000, with 160gig HD. I will post my lspci -v tomorrow positively . But here's the gist of the things. Booting from usb was no problem. since this was a trial, i decided not to compile a custom kernel, and decided to go ahead with the stock kernel that comes with the distro. The ethernet card got detected absolutely fine. Once the install was done, did an install of Xorg, with the intel driver, since the eee comes with i945 chipset.

Once the main install was done, startx worked fine, only the resolution was horribly wrong. so created the xorg.conf with Xorg configure, and manually added the modeline to use 1024X600 resolution. This time startx worked perfectly, with the right resolution. One more thing, touchpad works flawlessly, and so far i haven't detected any sluggishness. Read in some blog posts that with DebianEEE for instance, the touchpad doesn't behave the way it should and stuff. But I never had any issues.

Once I got a pretty working machine, the next thing was to configure wireless. Since the eee comes with ralink wireless device, and there's no native support for the same in 2.6.27, all I had to do was download the driver from ralink website, and build it. Once the driver got loaded, iwconfig worked great. iwlist got the accesspoints also right. the driver comes with its own config file to set ssid and so on, but i prefer wpa_supplicant. the preference can be set in the config file of the driver before building it. once i got the interface up with parameters from my wpa_supplicant, i got connected to my router. then happy wireless. since i added it as a module later, the interface gets activated on boot. I will post some screens with more info tomorrow.

That leaves us with only one more thing, eee specific monitoring, acpi and hotkeys. But building the modules will not be that difficult I guess. This is going to be task next weekend, when i have more time.

Overall it was a pretty fantastic experience to get Lunar running on this little baby. The machines boots to login in 17 seconds. Most of the stuff work right out of the box.

USB ports - out of the box support
Bluetooth - Haven't checked yet
camera - I don't need it, but still checked it, and with video4linux it works fine
Audio - snd_intel takes care of that and it works fine
Ethernet - Out of the box
Wireless - rt2860 driver needed, Once built from source, wireless works perfectly fine!
Hotkeys, and acpi - Will be working on them over the weekend.

That pretty much sums it up. But anyway I will post more details tomorrow!

Here's a screen of Lunar running on my EEEPC! Very Happy

It would be really brilliant if you could write this up as a User Report article on the Lunar wiki Exclamation

I'm running stock lunar on my eee pc 901. Apart from the wireless networking card, everything works out of the box with lunar, including the 3D support from the intel gfx chipset. I've managed to run Google Earth even on the system but of course that's really too much for the unit.

Other than that, power consumption of lunar on the 901 is really good. I get 4+ hours of battery life, even when playing scummvm games or browsing the internet. Compiling applications isn't too fast, but it only took me about 3 days to get everything including firefox installed on the 901.

If you plan to install lunar on the 901, have fun, it's a nice unit, and lunar does quite well on it.

It took me nearly two and a half days to setup the system as well. But worth the wait.

So I finally managed to do a writeup of my lunar install on eee pc 1000h. Uploaded the same over at the wiki page under the category user talk. Is it correct? I mean it has to be approved first before it goes to the user reports page or something like that? i have never done this before, but I am guessing I wrote in the correct page! Can anyone let me know if what i did is right?

Here is the link anyway! My nick is Skinwalker.

Thank you for a great article. I've added a link from the User Reports page.

Is there any chance that you could submit the screenshot to the gallery
and put the dot files in a new wiki page (or as an appendix to Skinwalker)?
That way we can keep them all together on one machine - just in case.

Thanks. I have already emailed striker a screenshot. Regarding the configs, I thought of adding them as well. I will add them straightaway.

Thanks for the linking.
